Choosing what to wear in the summer is easy as pie, you put on the lightest shorts and t-shirt and you’re ready to go. Running during the wet and cold winter months on the other hand brings up the question of choosing the right clothes and footwear to avoid overheating, but also stay safe, warm, and dry. Here are some suggestions that may come in handy when you are on the fence about your outfit:
Winter running shoes – there are special running shoes that provide good traction on slippery roads covered in ice and snow. Every footwear store has them or if you can’t find ones you like, you can always order online.
Warm clothes in layers – experienced runners recommend wearing two or three layers of special run clothing also known as technical clothing. Wool or synthetic pieces of clothing are better than cotton ones because the latter material absorbs moisture and will just make you feel colder. In addition to these layers (a moisture-wicking base, an insulating mid-layer, and a rain/windproof top-layer), you should consider putting on a hat, a neck gaiter, and gloves.
Reflective gear – make yourself visible to drivers as the winter days are shorter and there is less daylight.
Traction devices – when you run on snow or ice, it might be a good idea to use devices, such as microspikes to avoid slipping and falling
Water – carry a bottle of water and stay hydrated.
Headlamp – if you’ve picked a route on which there are roads without street lights, you’ll need a headlamp.
Smartwatch – you probably use one even during the warmer weather so there is no need to give it up now.
Sunglasses – they can protect your eyes from the intense glare from the snow.
Don’t make your winter runs dangerous and miserable by avoiding preparation. Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly so that the low temperatures and cold wind don’t spoil your run.
