Unregistered gas installer fined after failing to answer questions from HSE inspector.

Luke Rodgers was performing illegal gas work to repair a boiler in a home in Tingley, Wakefield, in February 2020. A Gas licensed engineer had to make the new boiler safe by disconnecting it from the gas supply after being left in a state

Mr.Rodgers asserted that the HSE questioned when he got hired to complete the installation work until the point at which it linked to the gas supply. He had secured the services of a knowledgeable acquaintance to handle all the gas work. Additionally, Mr.Rodgers claimed that a different acquaintance had helped him around the property.

Mr.Rodgers refused to identify either person during the interview, which is against the law because it impeded the inspector from conducting reasonable lines of inquiry as part of the investigation.

Luke Rodgers of Chapel Street in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, admitted guilt to violating Section 33(1)(e) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 in Huddersfield Magistrates' Court. At a hearing on August 8, 2022, he was fined £583 and told to pay $1,500 in costs.

"The defendant failed to comply with a duty under the Health and Safety at Work (etc.) Act 1974," HSE inspector David Beaton stated following the hearing. The defendant did not acknowledge the details of the matter, and this prosecution happened.

The HSE hopes this will serve as a warning to others that disobeying Majesty's Inspectors while they are exercising their legal authority will not be tolerated.
