Around the holiday season, Thames Valley Police and partners from all over West Berkshire will work together to combat violence against women & girls, with an emphasis on the nighttime economy.
A working committee has been organizing coordinated events for Christmas and the New Year to improve future activities. From these events, community input will be sought.
Door employees will get bystander training as part of the activity to assist them in spotting and stopping predatory behavior.
Additionally, on Friday, December 16, at 18:00 and Saturday, December 17, at 16:00, partners will staff a pop-up booth in Market Place, Newbury, where they will be available to answer any questions the public may have.
At night, Street Pastors will be available to help members of the public and give a secure setting for those needing assistance.
West Berkshire Council's Deputy Leader & Executive Member for Health and Welfare, Councillor Graham Bridgman, stated:
"To ensure that everyone has access to help for personal safety, West Berkshire Council, Thames Valley Police, and partners from throughout the area are cooperating.
"This is one element of a larger, longer-term strategy to combat violence. To ensure that West Berkshire remains a secure environment, we want to ensure that everyone's comments on the increased activity are considered.
According to Inspector Alan Hawkett of the Newbury police station:
West Berkshire is a safe location to live, work, and visit, but there is always room for improvement in lowering even low levels of violence. Thames Valley Police prioritizes combating violence against women and girls, and throughout the holiday season, partners came together to assist work in this area.
